Chapter 5
"I was born almost 16 years ago. I had just turned one, when the new procedures were introduced. My mother and my father eventually split up because my father was very much in The Vipers good books, in fact, they were actually quite good friends, and naturally, my father-Kyle- was all for the new regime. My mother, Lauren, on the other hand was completely against it, mainly because of how a lot of people wouldn't be able to cope with the changes. My brother -Michael- was four when my dad took off, he took us too, hoping to train us to work for the Viper with him. My brother and I were taken to be trained as soon as we arrived and by the time I was 5, I could throw a hell of a punch. Michael grew up to love the lifestyle but secretly, I hated it. When I had just turned 12, I heard news that my mother held a key position in the resistance and so I bided my time until I could run away. It took me almost 2 months to find any whisper of the resistance, and when I followed the lead I had, I still almost missed them, It was pure chance that I met Lilly. Of course, they were very unwilling to let me help at first, and even my mother was cautious at first, but when I gave them all the info I knew and helped in several of their missions, they started to trust me, and when I managed to bust a group of them out of a holding cell alone, I was a hero to them. By this time, I was almost 15, and I decided to ask for a solo mission, to be able to help a bit more. They took ages to make a decision, but eventually they agreed and prepared a mission. They told me that someone had been causing a lot of trouble for them and wanted to find out who it was, they decided that since I had found them, which was considered impossible, then I wouldn't have any trouble finding the guy they were after. A couple of days later, I set out and after 3 months of false leads and dead ends, I found him. Alex looked at Jay cautiously before continuing. He was in a large, two storey complex, near an old training camp. I watched him for almost 3 weeks, and noticed that he made frequent visits to the training camp with someone else... You. It was Danny."
Jay had frozen and was staring into space, but Alex could see that she was paying close attention to everything he said. He continued, "At first, I thought you were working with him, being trained by him, but then I saw how, underneath the smiles, you didn't like him at all. I also noticed that you sometimes disappeared for days at a time, and I must admit, I wondered where you went, but I had to stick to Danny, and I couldn't go tearing after you. Eventually, after I knew for sure that he was our guy, I called for backup, and I let them deal with it. I was about to head back with them, when I saw you escaping through a window, so I changed my mind. I told the guys to tell my mother I was busy, and headed after you. I followed you for a few weeks, and noticed that you were very good at ruining anything to do with the new regime, and realised that I had found our anonymous helper..."
His voice cut off as Jay grabbed his throat and pinned him to the tree-trunk. "What are you talking about?" she whispered roughly, before pinning him tighter to the tree, "You know nothing about me." He gasped for breath, "Let me...explain...will you..." he managed to gasp out. Jay stared at him before slowly retracted her fingers and edged back slightly. Alex coughed and massaged his throat, trying to get his breath back. When he had recovered, he sat back again, eyeing Jay warily, "Can I finish now?" he asked, and noticed Jays stony expression. "I'll take that as a yes." He gave a sigh and continued. "I also figured that you were trying to figure out about the robberies, and I noticed that you followed the mid-street kids a lot. 3 days ago, it was gonna be the last time I followed you, cause I needed to get back to work, but I saw you get ambushed in that alleyway and I couldn't really leave you there unconscious, could I? You were pretty impressive in that fight though, 12 down and you barely had a scratch. That takes serious skills. Especially when they were twice your size. Anyway, I took you to the nearest place I could think of. My old home. I figured that it would be abandoned but it turned out to be covered in motion sensors, by the time I figured that out, It was too late. You know the rest." "Actually," Jay said "I don't. What did those guys want from you and who do you think I am?"
Alex stared at her for a few seconds before saying "If I tell you and it gets out, I'm dead, " "Who am I gonna tell?" Jay stated matter-of-factly.
Alex stared at her for a bit longer, with a calculating look, before saying bluntly," I found the key to the scarlet tomb and I hid it. I'm the only one that knows the location." Jays eyes widened and her mouth dropped open, "WHAT?"
"Yeah," Alex replied "But just remember that you asked me to tell you and as to who I think you are... he hesitated before leaning forward and whispering a name into her ear. She sighed in resignation, "I guess you want to know all about it?" she asked, He laughed at her expression, "Why are you so reluctant to say anything about yourself. Most of the resistance think you're a hero." His grin fell as a thought crossed his mind, "Hang on, how did the Vipers lot know that I knew about the key? The only people I've ever told are the people on the resistance council. Someone's told the Vipers men... that means we have a traitor." Before Jay could say anything in response to his outburst, they heard voices below them, and glanced down to see a group of heavily armed men searching the forest floor. They both shut up and pressed themselves deeper into the tree, willing the men to move on, but instead they heard a voice, louder than the rest shouting, "It's getting too late, we won't find them tonight, they'll have to make a camp themselves, let's do the same and we'll track them in the daylight."
"Great," murmured Alex under his breath, "Just great, now well have to wait in this damn tree until they fall asleep, then climb down in the dark, we can't wait for morning, it's too risky."  Jay tapped him on the shoulder, "I'll take first watch", she offered, "I'm not as affected by the heat as you are, plus, I wasn't beaten to a pulp before I had to jump from the plane. You have to rest and heal a bit. She took a slim band of metal from her finger and handed it to him."Here," she said "Wear this. Its a healing band, It's not the strongest kind but it will do for you" He gratefully slid it on his finger, relief was visible in his face as the ring began to work. "Thanks," he said quietly, "Keep it," Jay said without a moments hesitation, "I have two more, I can spare that one. Sorry about grabbing you like that, but it was a bit of a shock. No-one else knows who I am. "Forgiven and forgotten," Alex assured her, as he drifted asleep. Jay made herself comfortable as she waited for the movement in the camp below to cease, as the rainforest switched to nocturnal mode.
More than two hours later, Jay nudged Alex awake and quickly placed a hand over his mouth. "Quietly," she whispered, and gestured for him to look at the camp. Alex shook himself awake and glanced over the edge of the branch. He could barely see anything, and it took him a few seconds to make out the individual tents around a large fire. He turned to face Jay. "Any lookouts?" he whispered.
"Look," she pointed, "next to the fire and at the edge of the camp, next to the largest tent." Alex looked down and eventually managed to make out lookouts. "So," he said quietly, "what's the plan?"

Alex was perched on the lowest branch he could find, tying the rope around the one above as securely as he could. A few seconds later, Jay hopped down next to him, "Got everything," she whispered quickly, "Ready to go?" "All set," he replied quietly. They sorted out their bags, swinging them on as comfortably as they could, and edged along the branch till they were level with the rope. "I'll go first," Alex whispered and Jay nodded, moving aside to allow him to grab the rope. He grasped it firmly in his gloved hands and swung himself around, clambering down. He reached the ground without any trouble and immediately ran, and crouched down in the nearby clump of bushes. Once there, he gestured to Jay that it was clear to follow. Before long, she was crouched down next to him. "Ready?" she whispered. "On three" he replied "One...two...three!" They broke cover and, stooping low, ran around the edge of the camp. They were almost clear when they heard a startled exclamation behind them. They froze and turned to see what had happened. One of the lookouts had got up to walk around and had walked straight into the rope dangling from the branch. His cry had woken the others and, in no time, there were torch lights swinging everywhere. Jay and Alex looked for somewhere to hide but they were in the open. They didn't have a choice. They made a break for it. Just as they made it to the relative cover at the edge of the clearing, they heard a voice behind them, "THERE!" before every other noise was cut out in a hail of bullets. One hit Jay in the arm and she nearly stumbled, but Alex managed to keep her upright. A few seconds later they were out of sight and the gunfire ceased. They stopped to try and catch their breath, but their relief was short lived, as they heard the men start giving chase. "Shoot on sight, but try not to kill them," a voice called out. "We still need the key," Alex and Jay ran.
After a few minutes of running flat out, they still seemed to gain no ground, and the humidity made it harder and harder to keep going. "We...need to...hide..." Alex managed to gasp, and Jay nodded her agreement, too busy trying to control her breathing to answer-although Alex noticed that she didn't seem to be struggling that much, and there was no strain evident in her face-. They kept going for a few more seconds, until Alex noticed a large bush, backed with bamboo just up ahead. He nudged Jay and motioned to it, before waiting till he was level with it and jumping. Milliseconds afterwards, Jay followed suit and they both scrambled further back into it, concealing themselves in the dense leaves and struggling to control their breath. Less than half a minute later, the group of men rushed past, but to Alex's and Jay's horror, one of them slowed, before stopping and crouching down next in front of the bush that they were hiding in, and picked up something off of the floor. It was an energy bar; Jay hurriedly glanced down at her bag. The zip had opened slightly and one of the bars must have fallen out when she jumped. The leaves parted in front of them and someone pushed through. They both pushed back, but the bamboo was like a wall behind them. They were trapped.
Ths is the first Chapter when you actuall start to realise what kind of background they come from. Feedback would Be appreciated!!!
